Simulacrum: Promo 2011

11/05/11  ||  Altmer

This is basically what progressive metal would sound like if you took all the clichés riffs; lots of keyboards; screechy high pitched vocals; time signature changes; a lot of attempts to be Dream Theater; sick double bass drumming; a produced bass; terrible songwriting.

This recording offers absolutely zero new things to these ears. I’m a prog metal veteran and I can tell exactly why this band was formed: to worship Dream Theater, Circus Maximus and co. Occasionally these guys throw in a bit more speed and groove, but there’s not much difference from what you’d find on your average prog metal record. Originality and progression are thrown out the door mercilessly. The songs aren’t too bad, but they all follow the same formula: groovy riff, high pitched screechy verses, solos inserted at random, chorus, verse, chorus, instrumental break where the instrumentalists go crazy, and end.

You know, I’m so bored of this style my cock just grew the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben and made them carry swords and duel. If you think that’s interesting, you can come watch my cock. These guys are not bad, but they’ve got nothing on legendary buildings dueling with swords. This is a pointless rerun of “Images and Words”. Me, I can listen to “Pull me under” all day and be just fine. But this is just shameless.

Recommendation: Get a better singer. His vocals suck and his accent sucks even more.
